Embracing Diversity

Our goal is  to continue to  be a community that celebrates the background, culture, rights and values of all its members; and that staff and students of any age, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, form of neurodivergence, race, religion and belief feel welcome here.  We have been extraordinarily successful in this regard and constantly strive to keep it that way and indeed advise other groups and institutes and departments and economics associations how to do this.  We are never completely satisfied as we are all socialised in an unequal world and therefore always subject to the same pressures as everyone else so it’s a constant and uphill struggle to make humanity more equal. We do however work to the mantra at all times that Equity is the Price of Survival in all that we do at the Institute.

An inclusive environment helps us to create a diverse Department and a wide pool of talented economists – staff and students. We recognise, however, that such diversity is not reflected in the current makeup of most other organisations department or the economics profession as a whole.

The current situation according to our latest February 2021 figures at the Green Economics Institute.

Whilst there will never be any room for complacency, it is fair to say that our Green Economics Institute scores  extremely highly in  the industry.

For example:

According to the American Economics Association (AEA) annual survey, women represent only around 20% of tenured faculty members in top US economics departments. The situation is much better here, where women represent 60-80%  of our academics.

At the Green Economics Institute around  75% of our students are female.

AEA surveys also reveal that ethnic minorities represent a mere 7% of all economics academics.  We aim for 50% -75% and have achieved that so far.
